Uh…and what the hell is she going on about anyway?????????
I thought I’d write a little bit about what each song is about to give you an idea about how I was thinking or feeling (or both!) when I wrote them (I’m not giving TOO much away though – I still think they should be open to your own interpretation). Take care,
The Rain:
Hmmmm…….this is kind of about feeling unsure about everything in your life and feeling as though everything and every one is against you. And then? Someone (a partner, a friend, a nurse, a teacher etc) comes into your life and helps you realize that there is hope and a future regardless of how miserable things may seem. And that’s cool.
Revolution:
I wrote this song AGES ago during my first admission to a psychiatric ward when I was feeling pretty messed up. “Rocky elevation” refers to the uphill climb to get better and the last line of the first verse “Don’t those insects look so pretty?” is tongue in cheek about the hallucinations I was having at the time.
I used to chant “This too shall pass” to myself over and over at night when I couldn’t sleep. It got me through some scary times.
The chorus, for me, REEKS of positivity – it’s about changing your mindset from negative to positive and being a survivor.
Finally, “cultivated safety” refers to the psychiatric ward and “Number one? You’re not alone” ? I was the first patient admitted externally into the Christie Ward (the psychiatric ward that I was in) so I was “number one” but not alone for long!!!
Elemental:
This one was written a while ago and whilst it’s pretty dark it used to be even darker as it had a really bleak third verse! Anyway, I had put it aside for a while and then, when I came across it again, I thought it had potential and rewrote the chorus, middle 8 and last verse (not changed much, then!).
The third verse is all about realising you have to (if you can) take responsibility for yourself and make that choice to get the hell out of that tunnel you’ve found yourself in.
Forget Me Not
The first verse? Ha ha, that’s up to you…..no clues I’m afraid! The chorus is kind of me trying to talk about feelings of numbness, apathy, misery and isolation which I have experienced in my life. I hope I get the point across.
The second verse is pretty self explanatory – it’s about the judgements other generations make about us and the frightening realization that, in this increasingly messed up World, “what future’s there???”
The song’s called “Forget Me Not” cos I’m trying to make the point that just because you are one person, an individual, you still matter and count in this society of ours.
My Attrition
The verses in this song are all about fear, self revulsion and paranoia – y’know, bad stuff but the chorus is saying “Y’know what? It’s okay to feel like that sometimes. We all do. You’re not alone.” Human beings are pretty complicated things and where there’s good there can, unfortunately be bad. However, and I can’t stress this enough, IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL GO AND FIND SOMEONE RESPONSIBLE TO TALK TO.
C ya 4 now
